STATESBORO, Ga. – Junior Parker Derby (Columbus, Ga.) recorded his second-highest career finish as the College of Charleston men's golf team placed 11th (-10) on the final day of The Schenkel Invitational on Sunday at the Forest Heights Country Club.
Derby made five birdies en route to a final-round 69 – his second under-par round of the tournament. He tied for seventh individually at 9-under with rounds of 66-72-69—207. Derby, a transfer from the University of Georgia, tied for fourth this spring at the Colleton River Collegiate – his previous career-high finish and making it two-straight weeks with Top-10 finishes.
Two of his other Cougar teammates finished in the Top 25. Junior William Rainey (Charlotte, N.C.) carded an even-par round on Sunday to finish tied for 21st (-5), while sophomore Anthony Gabriele (West Palm Beach, Fla.) tied for 25th (-4).
Nine of the 14 teams in the tournament field hosted by Georgia Southern were ranked in the Top 50 nationally including No. 15 Vanderbilt, who shot 41-under par to win the team title. Michael Johnson of Auburn won medalist honors in a playoff against Will Gordon of Vanderbilt. Both were tied at the end of the competition at -13.
“I thought that we had a solid week,” CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said. “Parker Derby played fantastic for the second week in a row and we got solid tournaments from Anthony (Gabriele) and William (Rainey). John (Jonas) gave us a solid round today and hope that this gives him some confidence heading into Bulls Bay. Our first round put us behind the eight ball having to count 78. We should have posted the lowest round of the year. We are very close to doing something special. I love this team.”
The Cougars will participate next in The Hootie on April 3-5 at Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, S.C.
