RICHMOND, Va. – Freshman forward Jarrell Brantley (Columbia, S.C.) headlined six College of Charleston players who earned conference honors as the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Basketball Awards were announced on Thursday night on the eve of the 2016 CAA Men's Basketball Championship.
Brantley, who leads all freshmen in the league in scoring (11.6 ppg) and rebounding (7.2 rpg), was tabbed CAA Rookie of the Year. He became the first player in nearly 10 years to be named freshman of the year since Jermaine Johnson received Southern Conference Freshman of the Year honors in 2006.
Brantley earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors three times and has started and played in all 29 games of the season for the Cougars. He is currently on a career-best 11-game double-digit scoring streak. Brantley was also named to the All-CAA Third Team and All-Rookie Team.
“Jarrell always gets to practice early, stays late and tries to get in extra work,” CofC Head Coach Earl Grant said. “It says a lot about our assistant coaches – the amount of time they have invested in helping Jarrell and all of our guys develop their skills. He has a strong work ethic and really deserves it after the season he has had. I'm happy to see that he has been rewarded for all of his hard work.”
Sophomore Cameron Johnson (Athens, Ga.) was selected to the All-CAA Third Team and CAA All-Defensive Team, junior Payton Hulsey (Memphis, Tenn.) to the CAA All-Defensive Team, junior Canyon Barry (Colorado Springs, Colo.) to the CAA All-Academic Team, sophomore Evan Bailey (Canton, Ohio) to the CAA All-Academic Team and freshman Marquise Pointer (Jonesboro, Ark.) to the CAA All-Rookie Team and All-Defensive Team.
“It was very humbling to have so many of our guys receive conference honors,” Grant said. “I'm really proud of all of the players as well as our assistant coaches and support staff for all of the hard work they have done to help our guys accomplish some really great things this season. Hopefully, we will continue to have individual success and team success in the future.”
