CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston baseball team defeated crosstown rival The Citadel, 12-9, on Sunday to sweep the three-game series. It is the second straight year the Cougars have swept The Citadel.
The teams combined to use 17 pitchers in a game that took four hours to complete. 410 pitches were thrown in the game and the pitching staffs combined to walk 17 batters. The longest nine-inning game in CofC history took 5 hours, 10 minutes in 2002 at Florida.
Both teams recorded double-digit hits with Jake Maziar, Morgan Phillips and Tommy Richter each finished with two hits each. Phillips logged three RBI on the day.
MOMENT THAT MATTERED
As The Citadel chipped away at Charleston's lead, Carter Love entered in the ninth inning looking to close things down. He accomplished just that retiring the Bulldogs on 18 pitches to earn his third save of the season.
TURNING POINT
The Cougars (7-5) took advantage of four walks and a hit batsman in the first inning to jump out to 5-0 lead. The Citadel (5-5) responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and one more in the third, but the early cushion and a four-run fourth inning was enough withstand the Bulldogs' five-run sixth.
