HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – A late surge by the College of Charleston baseball team was not enough to over come a five-run deficit as Hofstra took the series finale, 8-7, on Sunday at University Field.
The College (21-14-1, 5-4 CAA) pulled within one in the ninth when Bradley Jones launched a grand slam to left. It was the junior's ninth homer of the season and his second career grand slam. He last cleared the bases with a long ball on March 20, 2015 against Towson.
The Pride (12-24, 4-7) scored its runs in bunches plating three runs in the fourth and five in the seventh. CofC opened the scoring in the top of the fourth on an RBI ground out from Alex Pastorius. The senior outfielder drove two more runs in the sixth with a 2-RBI triple. At that point, Pastorius had driven in six of the team's seven runs on the weekend.
Eric Bauer got the start and tossed five innings allowing three runs on four hits. Justin Baker (1-2) took the loss after surrendering five runs in 1.2 innings of work.
