CHARLESTON, S.C. - Future member of the College of Charleston track & field program and Riverside High School (Greer, S.C.) senior Cate Ambrose received state-wide acclaim this week, as she was named the 2016-17 Gatorade South Carolina Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year.
This year alone, Ambrose led the cross country program to county, region and 5A state championships, as well as picking up a 5A individual state championship. As her coach notes though, the accolade takes her entire four-year high school career into account.
"She was the first in the county to win this award," Riverside High School cross country coach Eric Cummings said. "This award truly is an honor, and it shows what she's done in the four years she's been here, and she still has one more season of track & field to add to her resume."
"Her performances are big-time with our team," Cummings said. "Her teammates look up to her to see what she's doing and how she's doing it, and they try to mimic her. She's led by example, she's been there when other kids needed help. When she won the state championship, she got every single one of her teammates and brought them back to the photo shoot with her, and that's just the type of girl Cate is."
Ambrose formally committed to the College of Charleston during the early signing period back in November, and is slated to join both the cross country and track & field programs for the 2017-18 athletic year.
"We are very excited for Cate earning this tremendous honor," head coach Amy Seago said. "We couldn't be more proud and the award couldn't go to anyone more deserving. Cate is a tremendous athlete and student but more importantly, she is an amazing person. She is humble, an extremely hard worker and someone I look forward to working with in the years ahead."
