COLLEGE GROVE, Tenn. – College of Charleston sophomore Michael Sass (Louisville, Ky.) turned in his second career Top-5 finish shooting a season-low 69 in the final round of the Franklin American Mortgage Intercollegiate hosted by Middle Tennessee State at The Grove Club on Tuesday.
He birdied four holes on the final day and finished fourth on the individual leaderboard – one stroke shy of Jacob Joiner of Georgia Tech in third. Last year's Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year and the Cougars' top finisher at NCAA Regionals, Sass shot 3-under par for the tournament with rounds of 71 and 73 on Sunday and Monday.
Sophomore Hunter Dunagan (Augusta, Ga.) also finished in the Top 10 for the Cougars with rounds of 73, 70 and 72 to tie for seventh (-1).
"It was a fantastic tournament from Mike Sass and Hunter Dunagan," CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said. "To finish Top 10 in this field is really, really good. This will help them get in contention for CAA Player of the Year and know that it is an attainable goal to work towards this season."
The Cougars shot their lowest team round of the tournament with a 4-over par 292 on the final day of tournament action. Georgia Tech won the team title (-12) followed by Ole Miss in second (-4), Kennesaw State and host Middle Tennessee tied for third (+10), Liberty in fifth (+17) and USF and CofC tied for sixth (+23).
"Our team finish this week was a nice rebound from last week," McEntire said. "We have a good team. But, we need to continue to improve – and this team will do that. We have a few days off until Turtle Point and Stono. The goal is to continue to improve our finish each week and close out the fall season strong."
CofC will wrap-up its fall season with back-to-back tournaments at the end of the month – the CSU East Bay Deli Classic on Oct. 29-31 at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Turtle Point course on Kiawah Island, S.C., and The Invitational on Nov. 3-4 at The Links at Stono Ferry in Hollywood, S.C.
