ATLANTA, Ga. --- The College of Charleston sailing team wrapped up a challenging weekend on Sunday, as the Cougars finished fifth at the Truxtun Umsted Trophy and 10th at the Yale Women's, and were second at the North Points #5 before racing was suspended after one rotation due to lack of wind.
The North Points #5 was cut short on Saturday due to lack of wind after just one rotation, which prevented the event from being an official regatta. When racing was suspended, Charleston sat second out of a three-way tie between Clemson, the Cougars, and South Carolina. Sophomore skipper Will Martens (San Rafael, Calif.) and sophomore crew Keely Gregg (Skaneateles, N.Y.) finished with five points in A-Division, while freshman Jack Brown (Newtown Square, Pa.) and Oliver Parsons (Stonington, Conn.) accumulated three points in B-Division.
At the Truxtun Umsted, the Cougars finished the two-day regatta in fifth place with 415 points – five behind fourth-place Stanford. Stefano Peschiera (Lima, Peru) and Grace McCarthy (San Diego, Calif.) accumulated 97 points in A-Division – good for fifth – while Dirk Johnson, Carter Cameron (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.), and Elizabeth Pemberton (Osterville, Mass.) recorded 144 points in B-Division. Gerald Williams (Sai Kung, Hong Kong, China) sailed to a first-place finish in C-Division with 66 points, with Kelly-Ann Arrindell (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad) placing seventh in D-Division with 108 points.
The Cougars raced to a 10th-place finish at the Yale Women's, as sophomore skipper Paris Henken (Coronado, Calif.) and junior crew Annabel Carrington (White Stone, Va.) finished the weekend with 140 points in A-Division. Alie Toppa skippered B-Division to 99 points alongside junior crew Caroline Bracken (Bridgewater, Mass.).
Four regattas await the Cougars next weekend: the Hoyt Trophy on Saturday and Sunday, October 21 and 22 in Providence, R.I.; Mrs. Hurst on Saturday and Sunday in Enfield, N.H.; as well as the SAISA Match Race and Fall Ocean Race on Saturday at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex.
