Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars Complete Wild Finish to Conquer Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (2-5) and the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (3-4) played an instant classic in the HTC Center on Thursday night, and when the dust settled, the Cougars emerged with the 72-70 win in the last second of the game.

• The final seven seconds of the game proved to be a wild sequence. With the game tied at 70, CofC called a timeout to set up the final play. The College turned the ball over, setting up a fastbreak for CCU's DJ Williams, who was fouled on the final shot with half a second left. Williams then missed both her free throws, and then compounded her mistake by fouling on the rebound opportunity. That sent Deja Ford to the line with 0.3 seconds to play, and the Cougars walked away with the win.

• The game was extremely close for its entirety, as each quarter ended with no more than a two-point scoring differential for either team. The largest lead of the entire game was after the 7-0 run the Cougars submitted to start the game.

• Myrtle Beach native Tanisha Brown had a huge game in front of her friends and family, finishing with a career-high 25 points on 9 of 14 shooting from the field, adding 10 rebounds to complete her 13th career double-double. Brown also finished with two blocks and two assists.

• Shiclasia Brown had an excellent game of her own, scoring 21 points and going 11 of 13 from the charity stripe. As a team, the Cougars made the most of their free throw chances, converting 21 of their 29 attempts. Brown also logged five rebounds, seven assists, three steals and a block to cap off the stat-stuffing performance.

• 47 combined fouls were called on the evening, leading to both teams running into persistent foul trouble. Lexi Maddox and Baileigh Larson picked up five fouls for the Cougars, while Janae Camp fouled out for the Chanticleers.

• CCU's DJ Williams had a great night before her unfortunate end to the game, finishing with a game-high 27 points and adding five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Naheria Hamilton had a strong night as well, logging a 17-10 double-double.

The Cougars will remain on the road next week, when they travel to the state capital to take on the defending national champion South Carolina Gamecocks.
