CONWAY, S.C. – No. 19 Coastal Carolina struck for 11 runs in the opening four innings en route to a 16-7 midweek matinee win over the College of Charleston baseball team on Wednesday evening.
Coastal Carolina (2-3) scored 16 runs on 10 hits in the contest, compared to seven tallies on 14 base knocks for College of Charleston (2-2).
Reigning Colonial Athletics Association Player of the Week Logan McRae (Florence, S.C.) went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs, while Joey Mundy (Huntington, W.Va.) accounted for three hits. Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.), Erven Roper (Easley, S.C.), Danny Wondrack (Wall, N.J.), and Luke Manzo (Marietta, Ga.) each posted multi-hit games with two hits apiece.
Kris Kuhn (Summerville, S.C.) took the loss in his first collegiate start, as Nathan Ocker (Middletown, Pa.) tossed a scoreless eighth with two strikeouts.
Wood Myers and Dalton Ewing each drove in four runs to pace the Chanticleers, while Kevin Woodall, Jr. plated three. Myers scored four runs, as Seth Lancaster and Cory Wood both came across three times. Anthony Veneziano went four innings and allowed two runs on six hits to earn the win for the Chants.
Coastal opened the scoring with three runs in the home half of the first, before Hart's RBI single in the top of the second cut the lead to 3-1. After the Chanticleers added three in the third and five in the fourth, McRae answered for the Cougars in the fifth with his first career grand slam down the left field line to trim the margin to 11-5.
The Chanticleers plated two in the home half of the fifth before a three-run homer from Ewing capped Coastal's scoring in the sixth. The Cougars countered with a two-run seventh, including a run-scoring single to center by Manzo to close out the night's scoring.
Charleston will open its 2017 home slate on Friday when the Cougars welcome Cincinnati to Patriots Point for the first game of a three-game set. First pitch is slated for 5:00 pm.
