KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Four under-par counting scores in the final round led the College of Charleston women's golf team to a runner-up finish (+7) at the 2017 Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Classic – the largest collegiate golf tournament in the country – on Tuesday at the Kiawah Island Resort's Osprey Point course.
The Cougars shot a school-record and tournament-low round of 279 (-9) behind rounds of 69 from graduate senior Mary Fran Hillow (Orlando, Fla.) and senior Vici Drechsler (Munich, Germany). It was a bogey-free round by Hillow and Drechsler's career low round with four birdies. Drechsler tied for 13th (+1) individually, while Hillow tied for 17th (+3).
Freshman Victoria Huskey (Greenville, S.C.) shot 1-under par and senior Laura Fuenfstueck (Langen, Germany) 2-under par in the final round. The program's previous record for lowest round was 284 – set in the final round of the GSU/Pelican Preserve Invite during the 2006-07 season.
"It was a great bounce back for us after last week," CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. "You have to feel good when you set school records. Today's round was a school record. Coastal beat us by a shot. But, we didn't lose, Coastal won."
Fuenfstueck was the individual medalist shooting a tournament-record 54-hole total of 70-68-70—208 (-8) in the 232-player field. It marked her fifth career tournament win at The College. She broke a school record previously held by former great Steffi Kirchmayr, who won four career tournaments from 2006-09.
"Laura is really on her game right now," Futrell said. "I knew she was going to have a great spring. She's just an awesome player – there's no other way to put it."
The Cougars will return to action at the UNF Collegiate hosted by North Florida on March 6-7 at the Jacksonville Golf & Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla.
Tournament Notes: Coastal Carolina won the team title (+6) for the second year in a row…Paula Vega of Jacksonville State made the lone hole-in-one of the tournament on the par-3, 11th at Osprey Point on Tuesday.
