No. 3 Tar Heels Too Much in 7-0 Defeat
3/11/2017 9:04:00 PM | Women's Tennis
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The Cougars found success in spots on Saturday against a high caliber opponent, but in the end, the No. 3 North Carolina Tar Heels (16-1) were too much for the College of Charleston women's tennis team (5-4).
Despite dropping the doubles point 2-0, the College played UNC tough to start things off. Liza Fieldsend and Rachel McNeely went down with a fight, falling 6-4. Mara Argyriou and Anastasia Palaska didn't finish their flight two matchup, but led 4-3 when things wrapped up.
The Tar Heels fielded three nationally ranked singles players against the Cougars, and two of them pulled off decisive wins in the top two flights. Flight three was a battlefield however, where Argyriou squared off with No. 78 Makenna Jones. The two split their opening two sets, and with the overall match already decided, the two settled things in a super tiebreak. Argyriou and Jones traded blows, but the Tar Heel separated at the end to take the 10-5 win.
"It was a great atmosphere today with a lot of people out supporting me by my court, which I really fed off of," Argyriou said. "At the end of the day, my opponent was a little bit tougher, and full credit to her for playing as hard as she did."
Palaska played a competitive match in the fifth flight as well, but was bested by Rachel James-Baker by a score of 7-5, 6-4.
The Cougars will have a day off before returning to action on Monday against the Appalachian State Mountaineers.
