LINCOLN, Neb. --- Logan McRae (Florence, S.C.) launched his team-leading sixth home run of the year to pace the offense, as the College of Charleston baseball team fell to Nebraska in Friday's series opener, 10-1, at Hawks Field.
Nebraska (7-8) plated 10 runs – including five in the fourth – on 13 hits, while limiting College of Charleston (8-10) to one tally on six base knocks. McRae went 2-for-3 with a solo homer to raise his average to .391 for the season.
Luke Manzo (Marietta, Ga.),
Tommy Richter (Wayne, Pa.),
Bradley Dixon (Greenwood, S.C.) and
Riley Knudsen (Cabot, Ark.) each picked up a hit for the Cougars.
Jakob Frishmuth (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) got the start and lasted three and two-thirds, striking out three and allowing eight runs.
Clay Hunt (Fort Mill, S.C.) surrendered two runs and struck out three in two frames, while
Max McKinley (Tallahassee, Fla.) tossed two and one-third scoreless innings to end the night.
Scott Schreiber led the way for Nebraska with a 3-for-4 effort and drove in four runs. Luis Alvarado added three base knocks, while Jake Meyers and Jesse Wilkening each picked up two hits. Six Huskers recorded at least one RBI.
Jake Hohensee allowed one run on four hits and struck out four in six and two-thirds innings to earn the win. Matt Waldron tossed one and one-third scoreless frames in relief, while Connor Curry pitched a perfect ninth with a strikeout.
The Huskers opened the scoring with two in the second, before Schreiber doubled the lead to 4-0 with a two-run homer to center in the third. McRae would cut the advantage to 4-1 in the fourth, when the redshirt sophomore sent a 3-2 pitch into the right field bullpen for a one-out solo home run.
Nebraska answered in the home half, plating five runs on five hits to extend the lead to 9-1. The Huskers would add a run in the fifth to push the margin of 10-1. The Cougars put a runner in scoring position in the seventh and eighth innings, but were unable to force them across the plate.
Charleston will take the diamond for the second game of the weekend against the Cornhuskers on Saturday afternoon at 2:05 pm CT at Hawks Field.
