Cougars Take Series From Hofstra With 4-2 Sunday Win

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Bradley Dixon (Greenwood, S.C.) drove in two runs, and Evan Sisk (Chester, S.C.) surrendered one run in five innings out of the bullpen to lead the College of Charleston baseball team to a 4-2 win over Hofstra on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletics Association play.

With the win, the College of Charleston (10-14, 2-1 CAA) moves into a tie with James Madison, UNCW and Elon atop the conference standings, while Hofstra falls to 6-16 overall and 1-2 in the CAA. The Cougars plated four runs on seven hits – including three that went for extra bases – while limiting Hofstra to two tallies on nine base knocks.

Seven Cougars picked up a base hit in the contest, as Dixon drove in two and Seth Wall (Georgetown, S.C.) and Joey Mundy (Huntington, W.Va.) each colleted an RBI. Tucker White (Sterling, Okla.) got the start and lasted three innings, allowing one run on five hits and striking out three. Sisk entered out of the bullpen and earned the win with five frames of one-run baseball, while striking out three and scattering four hits. Justin Baker (Huntersville, N.C.) tossed a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.

Brad Witkowski paced the Pride with a 3-for-4 afternoon, while Teddy Cillis added two hits. Mikey Riesner and David Leiderman each drove in a run. John Rooney took the ball, and surrendered three runs on four hits and struck out five in five and one-third innings. John Ryan tossed two and one-third frames, while Witkowski recorded one out in the eighth.

The Pride got on the board first in the top of the opening inning, when Witkowski doubled and came around on a Riesner single to give Hofstra an early 1-0 lead. Leiderman then doubled the advantage to 2-0 with a leadoff homer in the fourth.

Charleston answered in the home half, cutting the advantage to 2-1 on a double down the right field line by Wall after Erven Roper (Easley, S.C.) and Danny Wondrack (Wall, N.J.) drew back-to-back one-out walks. Dixon then smoked a 1-0 pitch into centerfield for an RBI single to score Wondrack, and tie the game at 2-2.

The Cougars would take the lead with a run in the sixth after Wondrack led off with a triple to left center, and Dixon drove him in with a sac fly to right to put The College in front, 3-2. Charleston added to the lead with a run in the eighth, stretching the advantage to 4-2 on a hard-hit single to center by Mundy that scored pinch-runner Xavier Freeman (New Lima, Okla.) from second.

Baker then shut the door with a scoreless ninth to earn his fourth career save following an inning-ending strikeout of Cillis.

The Cougars return to the diamond on Tuesday when they host Georgia Southern in a midweek non-conference battle. First pitch is set for 6:03 pm at Patriots Point.
