The College Sets Program Record With 2-0 Friday At Palmetto Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. --- Taylor Foley (Agoura Hills, Calif.) and Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio) posted a pair of convincing wins in the fifth flight, while McKala Rhodes (Charleston, S.C.) and Krissy Mummey (Hudson, Ohio) posted a hard-fought victory in their top-flight debut to lead the College of Charleston beach volleyball team to a 2-0 day against Tulane and Jacksonville State on Friday at South Carolina's Palmetto Invitational.
The College of Charleston (11-5, RV) opened the day with a 4-1 win over Tulane (18-9, RV), before posting a 4-1 victory over Jacksonville State (5-24) in the afternoon session. With its 10th and 11th victories of the season, The College sets a new program single-season record for wins in its fifth year of competition.
Foley and Freed set the tone for the day with a dominating 21-7, 21-10 win in the fifth flight against Tulane, before Allison Beckman (Apex, N.C.) and Lauren Hollman (Union, Ky.) posted a 21-18, 21-15 victory in the fourth flight to give the Cougars a quick 2-0 lead. Riana Brennan (Los Gatos, Calif.) and Devon Rachel (Louisville, Ky.) followed with a 21-18, 21-15 win at No. 3 to clinch the team victory, while Rhodes and Mummey registered the Cougars' fourth point with a 25-23, 10-21, 15-12 decision in their debut at No. 1.
The Cougars made quick work of Jacksonville State at the fours and fives, with Foley and Freed registering a 21-14, 21-7 win in the fifth flight before Rachel and Beckman took home a 21-12, 21-16 victory in the fourth. Katja Ehlers (Raleigh, N.C.) and Hollman followed with a 21-15, 19-21, 16-14 win in the third flight to clinch the team victory. Brennan and Maddie Hills (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) posted an easy 21-9, 21-13 victory in the second flight, as Rhodes and Mummey battled to an 18-21, 21-13, 8-15 decision at No. 1.
Charleston will wrap up the weekend with matchups against UNC Wilmington and No. 12 South Carolina on Saturday at 11:00 am and 5:00 pm, respectively.
