Cougars Look to Strike It Rich Against 49ers

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team (13-6) plays its final regular season contest this Saturday, when it will travel to the Queen City to take on the Charlotte 49ers (10-13) at noon.

The Cougars split their matches last week, beating the Hampton Pirates 7-0 before narrowly falling to Old Dominion by a score of 4-3. Juan Estevarena was named CAA Player of the Week after going 2-0 in singles, 2-0 in doubles and defeating No. 37 Adam Moundir in top flight action. Benedikt Henning meanwhile extended his unbeaten streak in singles to 11 matches from the second flight position.

CofC will reenact the finale to the 2016 regular season, where they closed things out against the 49ers as well. That match took place at Patriots Point, and resulted in a 4-3 victory for the Cougars. Estevarena, Zack Lewis, Vasily Kichigin and Garrett Gordon led the charge in singles play to lift the College after the team surrendered the doubles point.

The 49ers have struggled as of late, dropping seven of their previous eight matchups. Their lone victory came against Radford by a score of 5-2. Oriol Puig Forne and Alejandro Garcia Moreno lead the team in singles play with matching 13-10 records, doing their work in the middle flights.
