COLUMBIA, S.C. – The College of Charleston track & field program made significant strides in the throws and middle distance events at Saturday's Gamecock Invitational, hosted by the University of South Carolina.
Simone Harris and Asia Johnson both had banner days in the shot put, finishing sixth and ninth respectively. Harris added 71cm to her personal best with a heave of 13.47m, while Johnson improved by 15cm with a lob of 12.79m. The two were ranked No. 2 and 3 in the event in CofC history, and remain lodged in those same spots in spite of their PRs.
Carlee Cassidy had her second strong meet in a row, claiming third place finish in the 1500m, narrowly missing a personal best with a time of 4:40.13.
Elsewhere in the throws, Nicole Lane put up a tenth place finish in the javelin with a distance of 34.87m. Harris finished 15th in the discus throw with a toss of 36.49m, and Courtney Brooks came tantalizingly close to a personal best in the hammer with a throw of 45.11m to finish 12th.
Julisa Tindall finished tied for second in the high jump with a height of 1.65m, while Leona Burton Rojas took 14th in the long jump with a leap of 5.22m. Katherine Linn finished 17th in the hurdles with a time of 1:06.77.
Jordan Gravelle rounded things out in the sprints, finishing 27th in the 400m (58.86) and 40th in the 200m (25.92). All told, the Cougars scored 16 team points on the day.
The College returns to action next weekend, and will split the team up to take part in both the Duke Invitational and the USC Open.
