Late Rally Falls Short For Cougars In 8-5 Setback To Chanticleers

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston baseball team fell to Coastal Carolina by a score of 8-5 on Wednesday evening at Patriots Point after the Chanticleers plated seven runs in the third inning.

Coastal Carolina (23-13-1) scored eight runs on 13 hits, while limiting College of Charleston (17-20) to five tallies on five base knocks. Logan McRae (Florence, S.C.) pushed across two runs, while Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.) and Tommy Richter (Wayne, Pa.) each picked up one RBI. Luke Morgan (New Lenox, Ill.) collected a base hit and scored a run.

Max McKinley (Tallahassee, Fla.) got the start and surrendered four earned runs on seven hits in two innings. Carter Love (Charlotte, N.C.) entered in the third and worked out of a bases-loaded jam as part of a two-inning, three-strikeout outing. Tucker White (Sterling, Okla.) tossed three shutout frames, while Nathan Ocker (Middletown, Pa.) kept the Chants off the board with two scoreless innings.

Five Chanticleers recorded multi-hit games, as Wood Myers went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Jordan Gore, Cory Wood, Kieton Rivers, Seth Lancaster, and Matt Beaird each drove in one run.

Coastal Carolina starter Anthony Veneziano lasted three innings, allowing two earned runs on one hit and striking out four. Will Latcham got the win with one and two-thirds shutout innings, while Cole Schaefer kept the Cougars off the board for one and one-third frames. Bobby Holmes surrendered two runs in two innings, while Andrew Beckwith tossed a scoreless ninth to earn the save.

The Chanticleers took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on back-to-back doubles by Myers and Gore. Coastal Carolina would stretch the advantage to 8-0 with a seven-run third, which included a two-run home run by Myers.

Charleston countered in the home half, pushing across three runs to cut the lead to 8-3 on a passed ball and a two-run double down the left field line by McRae. The Cougars trimmed the margin further in the seventh, when Hart plated Joey Mundy (Huntington, W.Va.) with a single, and Richter drove in Morgan with a sac fly to close the gap to 8-5.

Morgan and Hart kept the rally going in the ninth, reaching with back-to-back walks to lead off the inning. Beckwith quickly settled down with consecutive strikeouts before forcing a fly out to left to end the threat, and the game.

The Cougars return to the diamond on Friday when they host Towson at Patriots Point in the first game of a Colonial Athletic Association series. First pitch is set for 6:00 pm.
