Cassidy Wins Steeplechase at UNF Invite

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – The College of Charleston track and field team submitted five improvements to its Top 10 lists and secured an event championship at the UNF Invitational on Saturday, earning 28 team points in the process.
Carlee Cassidy defeated all comers in the steeplechase, eclipsing second place by over nine seconds with a time of 10:43.08. Fellow distance runner Ellen Feringa also had a big day, setting a huge outdoor PR of 17:40.99. That effort not only finished fifth in the event, but also vaulted her to No. 5 on the CofC Top 10 Performance List.
Simone Harris and Asia Johnson both established PRs in the discus throw, finishing sixth and 16th respectively. Harris' distance of 39.98m advanced her to No. 4 on the CofC All-Time list, while Johnson's effort of 36.48m debuted her at No. 9. The two also did work in the shot put, heaving for 11.88m and 11.86m, finishing just a few spots ahead of Alex Coyle who hit a PR of her own with a lob of 11.12m.
Coyle also took 11th in the hammer throw with a distance of 44.07m. Nicole Lane had the highest finish of any CofC thrower, taking third in the javelin with a toss of 35.18m.
Julisa Tindall finished fourth in the high jump with a height of 1.70m, while Leona Burton Rojas (5.19m) and Breanna Tatum (10.79m) each finished 19th in the long jump and triple jump respectively.
In the 800m run, Marissa Small-Towns finished 11th with a time of 2:18.39, while Jordan Gravelle established a personal best time of 2:20.99 to take 14th and move up to No. 8 on the CofC All-Time performance list.
In the hurdles, Jenny Martin (15.20) took 16th in the 100 meter race while Katherine Linn (1:07.39) finished 15th in the 400m.
The Cougars return to action next weekend for USC's Gamecock Invitational.
