ELON, N.C. - It was a pair of freshmen that paced the College of Charleston at Saturday's Elon Opener, as both the men's and women's cross country teams logged 4th place team finishes.
Newcomers Declan Hines and Tess Masselink had outstanding debuts for the College, pacing the team with 11th and 7th place finishes respectively. Hines crossed the finish line with a time of 19:04 in his 6K race, while Masselink submitted a time of 14:49 in her 4K. Hines had the added distinction of finishing first among all CAA runners, his next-closest CAA foe being Elon's Greg Paugh who finished 25 seconds back.
On the men's side, Hayden DiBona had an excellent outing in his own right with a 12th place time of 19:22. The Boiling Springs HS tandem of Tyler Fish (20:20) and Crew Kosiorek (20:21) crossed the finish line 33rd and 34th, while Jack Beattie rounded out the CofC scoring with a time of 20:25 in 36th place.
On the women's side, senior standout Tori Churchill took 15th with a time of 14:59, finishing a few second before Ellen Feringa and Cate Ambrose finished the race together in 20th and 21st. Marissa Small-Towns was the fifth Cougar done, taking 29th place with a time of 15:38.
All told, the men scored 123 points, finishing behind Campbell (22), UNC (44) and Elon (94). The women meanwhile score 92 points, outpacing the Delaware Blue Hens who finished fifth with a tally of 109.
