BOONE, N.C. - Three Cougars etched their names in the school record books on Saturday in Boone, N.C., as the women finished third and the men took fifth at Appalachian State's Mountains to Sea Duals.
The CofC women scored 83 team points, finishing behind North Carolina (24) and App State (60). The men tallied 127 points, finishing just four points shy of Coastal Carolina.
Freshman Tess Masselink paced the Cougars for the second straight race with a fourth place finish, and her time of 17:53.53 made history. Not only did her speed tab her as the fifth-fastest 5K runner in school history, but it was also the 10th-fastest individual time as well. Senior Tori Churchill cracked the top 10 as well with a time of 18:11.10, and freshman Cate Ambrose made school history by becoming the 10th-fastest 5K runner in school history with her 15th place time of 18:15.30. Ellen Feringa (18:59.48, 33rd place) and Marissa Small-Towns (19:03.98, 36th place) rounded out the scoring for the College. At a team scoring average time of 18:28.48, it was the team's best performance at Boone in school history.
On the men's side, sophomore Hayden DiBona had a huge day of his own with a 7th place finish, and his time of 25:42.20, though not quite a personal best, was still the 16th-fastest individual 8K performance in school history. Freshman standout Declan Hines also had an excellent outing with his 11th place time of 25:58.57. Crew Kosiorek (27:49.47, 40th place), Evan Peirce (27:53.75, 43rd place) and Jack Beattie (27:58.69, 45th place) also scored for CofC, with Peirce establishing a new collegiate personal best in the process.
The Cougars will have the next two weeks to themselves before competing again. On September 30, the team will be split up, with a portion of the athletes going to the Louisville Sports Commission Cross Country Classic, while the rest of the team stays in the Lowcountry to race in The Citadel's Will Wilson Invitational.
