CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's golf team heads to the Rocky Mountains for the Golfweek Conference Challenge hosted by the University of Denver on Sept. 25-27 at the par-72 Red Sky Golf Club in Vail, Colo.
Sponsored by Golfweek Magazine, the tournament invites the best teams from their respective conferences to the event. Thus, the field will be a tough one this week for the Cougars' youth.
The Cougars (Colonial) will play alongside host Denver (Summit League), San Diego State (Mountain West), Pepperdine (West Coast), TCU (Big 12), Old Dominion (Conference USA), Arizona (Pac-12), UC Riverside (Big West), Michigan (Big Ten), Louisville (ACC), SMU (American), Campbell (Big South), Coastal Carolina (Sun Belt), Central Arkansas (Southland), Mercer (Southern), Sacramento State (Big Sky), Akron (Mid-American) and Eastern Kentucky (Ohio Valley).
CofC is coming off a respectable fourth-place finish at the 11-team William & Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, Va. The squad continued to show its depth in Williamsburg. Senior Josefine Garton (Linkoping, Sweden) led the way finishing tied for 12th with a three-round total of 227, while sophomore Victoria Huskey (Greenville, S.C.) shot a 228. Six other Cougars were within three shots of Huskey showing the team's depth this season.
"We will need to continue our improvement this week against the likes of Arizona, Michigan, Louisville, SMU, TCU, San Diego State and Pepperdine," CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. "We will start two talented freshmen in Chloe Currie (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) and Olivia Hamilton (Oakenshaw, England). Joining Josefine and Victoria in the lineup will be junior transfer, Anna Buchanan (Athens, Ga.), who was the No. 1 player at Samford last year before transferring to us this summer."
The Cougars will be paired with Akron and Eastern Kentucky in tomorrow's first round and will tee-off at 10:45 a.m. (MT) / 12:45 p.m. (ET). Live tournament scoring will be available at: www.Golfstat.com.
