Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars Fall on the Road to First-Place Dukes

HARRISONBURG, VA. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (5-16, 1-9) were able to reduce an early-double digit deficit to four against first-place CAA foe James Madison (13-7, 9-0), but the Dukes were able to reaffirm control in the third and fourth quarters and pull away for the 67-53 win.

• CofC went down by as many as 12 in the second quarter, but fought their way back with an 11-4 run to end the half and reduce JMU's lead to 30-25. From there, a Deja Ford And-One early in the third was able to get the Cougars to within four. But JMU responded, and pushed the lead to 10 at the end of the third and as high as 17 for the game.

Darien Huff led all players on either team with 16 points, doing so on 7 of 12 shooting, including a pair of threes. Her biggest scoring contribution came at the end of the second. The Cougars had trailed by as many as 11, but Huff's efforts helped chop it to five heading into the locker room.

• Deja Ford joined Huff in double digits, hitting two threes to go with her third-quarter And-One. Bri Sullivan helped give the Cougars a jolt with four early rebounds, and finished with six on the afternoon to lead the team.

• Both teams encountered shooting problems, each going below 40% from the field. Though CofC was superior from long range with a 5 of 14 performance, JMU was able to separate themselves in the rebounding department (45 to 30), and outscored CofC 14-1 on second-chance points.

• James Madison adopted a scoring-by-committee approach to the game, with four players reaching low double-digit outputs. Kayla Cooper-Williams was the most valuable player for JMU with a 10-12, adding five blocks.

• The Cougars remain in ninth place despite the defeat thanks to a 80-62 UNCW loss to Delaware. The Dukes meanwhile maintain their lead on the conference lead, staying undefeated at 9-0 in CAA play. Nevertheless, they lead it by just one game, as Drexel's record stands at 8-1 in conference competition.

The Cougars return home next weekend for a pair of games against Elon and Drexel in TD Arena.
