CHARLESTON, S.C. – In a battle between the 2nd and 3rd place Colonial Athletic Association teams, James Madison found a golden goal with 30 seconds left in double-overtime to defeat the College of Charleston women's soccer team 2-1 at Patriots Point on Thursday evening.
Charleston started the brighter, high defensive pressure creating a number of attacking opportunities with Ali Freitas flashing the ball across the six-yard box and Laura Ortega winning a series of corners in the opening exchanges.
Meredith Tunney showed her defensive expertise in the 30th minute by easing the JMU forward off the ball as they looked to go through one-on-one, with Ortega battling past two Dukes to record her first shot on goal minutes later.
In the 59th minute Ortega opened the scoring. The Dukes goalkeeper passed the ball out wide with Alyssa Beck reading the pass, intercepting and playing across for Ortega to finish from 12-yards. The senior from Aranjuez, Spain, is now a lone goal from tying the all-time career goals record at CofC.
Tunney threw her body on the line minutes later, blocking an effort at the top of the box until the Dukes levelled in the 68th minute with a finish from 5-yards that squeezed under Meredith Holton in the Charleston goal.
Overtime couldn't separate the sides with JMU counter-attacking at the end of double-overtime and scoring the game-winner with only seconds left on the clock to take the 2-1 win.
Head coach Christian Michner and his squad now look to Sunday's matchup against conference leaders Northeastern with the Charleston senior class honored prior to the 12 p.m. kickoff.

• Ortega is now one goal from tying the all-time CofC goals record
