CHARLESTON, S.C. – Three Cougars scored double figures, three also hitting career milestones, as the College of Charleston women's basketball team took down cross-city rivals Charleston Southern 79-52 on Wednesday night.
Fresh off a Colonial Athletic Association Honorable Mention Player of the Week nod,
Deja Ford got the Cougars rolling with a feed from
Ericka Broughton in the paint. Charleston raced into a commanding early lead behind a 17-0 run with
Darien Huff knocking down her first three of the game,
Arynn Eady adding a layup and
Ericka Broughton scoring via a jumper.
The reigning CAA Rookie of the Week,
Tyler Collins added a three pointer midway through the first to give her 100 career points; she added a jumper at the end of the period to cement a 25-12 lead.
After opening the game shooting 62%, Charleston continued to be efficient from the field, finishing the half shooting over 50% with a 44-26 lead.
Huff knocked down a three early in the third to reach 800 career points, 13 on the night, for her ninth double-digit scoring performance of the season. Eady adding four of her six points in the third period with Collins (leading the CAA with 6.5 assists per game) reaching nine assists as Charleston finished the period shooting over 60%.
Huff, ranked 4
th in the NCAA in free throw percentage, added another four from the charity stripe in the fourth with
Lexi Maddox and
Dee Heath adding to the points total.
Latrice Perkins closed out the scoring with a fast break layup to hit 50 career points and give Charleston a 79-52 victory.
With the win The College moves to 4-5 on the year and 51-12 all-time over Charleston Southern, 3-0 under
Candice M. Jackson.
Jackson and the Cougars now look to one last pre-Christmas game on Friday against Presbyterian. Tipoff is set for 12 p.m. at TD Arena with the game also broadcast live on the Charleston Sports Network.
