CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (6-21, 2-14) got off to a spirited start in their Education Day matchup with UNCW (10-19, 3-13) on Friday, but shooting woes in the middle of the game allowed the Seahawks get back into it and pull away late as the Cougars were defeated 76-60.
• The Cougars started the game on a 5-0 run, controlled a 20-11 advantage after the first quarter, and had a game-high lead of ten points early in the second quarter.
Darien Huff helped spark things with a pair of early threes, while
Tanisha Brown was on a terrific early pace with a 7-6-6 at the end of the first.
• Brown finished with a 13-9-9, which was the second time this season that she's flirted with her first career triple double against the Seahawks. Two weeks ago, the senior tallied a 15-15-9 in CofC's 72-63 road win.
• Brown was one of four Cougars to finish in double figures, with Huff (12 Pts), Ford (11 Pts) and Dorsey (10 Pts) all joining her. The Cougars shot 39% from the field for the game, but encountered five-minute scoring droughts during the second and third quarters. UNCW was able to use that time to reverse a 10 point deficit into a 16 point lead by the midway point of the third quarter.
• UNCW's Timber Tate and Jenny DeGraaf each posted a matching game-high 22 points, as both set scoring career highs. Tate was effective from long range with six triples, while DeGraaf did her work inside on 10 of 14 shooting, adding eight boards.
• With the defeat, CofC falls behind UNCW in the conference standings into the No. 10 spot.
CofC will close out their home schedule this Sunday when they host the Northeastern Huskies at 2 p.m. in TD Arena.
