GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The College of Charleston men's golf team claimed its first tournament win of the season shooting a tournament-record and school-record low 54-hole total of 816 (-48) at the two-day Loyola (Md.) Intercollegiate held at the par-72 Palm Valley Golf Club.
The Cougars' previous best finish was runner-up at The Battle of Stono Ferry in the fall. It marked the ninth career win for head coach Mark McEntire. They surpassed the previous school record held by the 2000-01 squad, which shot an 824 at the Gator Invitational, and the 2007-08 squad that shot -35 at the Turtle Bay Resort College Intercollegiate.
Overall, all five of CofC's starters finished under par for the tournament with only three rounds over par for the weekend.
Leading the way for the Cougars was sophomore Logan Sowell (Kershaw, S.C.), who shot career-low rounds of 66, 67 and 67 to finish 16-under and runner-up to individual medalist Ambrose Abbracciamento of Hartford (-17).
"What a great tournament for our program," CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said. "We broke the team lowest 54-and 36-hole records, the lowest individual round and got a W. I could not be happier for the guys. Congrats on the play from Logan Sowell. It was an excellent week for him and I hope he uses this as a springboard for the rest of the spring. He is a very good player."
After shooting a first-round and school-record low round of 62, sophomore Hunter Dunagan (Augusta, Ga.) tied for seventh at 12-under. Sophomore Michael Sass (Louisville, Ky.) also finished the tournament strong with back-to-back rounds of 66 – which was a career low for the 2017 Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year. He tied for seventh (-12) to mark his second Top 10-finish of the season.
In his Cougar debut, sophomore Colin Hamilton (Southlake, Texas) tied for 24th with rounds of 70, 70 and 71 (-5), while freshman Reed Bentley (Spartanburg, S.C.) tied for 41st (-1) in his second career start.
"Hunter and Reed played well today and allowed us to shoot a really good final round," McEntire said. "We counted four scores in the 60s and dropped a -1. That is a coach's dream."
The Cougars will take the next weeks off from competition before traveling to The Schenkel hosted by Georgia Southern on March 16-18 at Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.
