MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team (10-6) scored a comeback win in doubles play to steal an early point from Samford (6-7) early, and rode that momentum to a strong singles outing to defeat the Bulldogs 5-2 at Patriots Point.
CofC and Samford split two doubles matches, leaving things to be decided on court two between the Cougars' pairing of Rachel McNeely and Helena Nyikos, and the Bulldogs' duo of Holly Horsfall and Elsa Pool. Samford led the match 5-4, and then CofC surged back to take a 6-5 lead. Samford didn't go down without a fight, overcoming three match points to force a tiebreak. But the College was too much, ultimately emerging 7-6(3) to take the point.
The Cougars carried the edge into singles, where they won five of their six opening sets. Nyikos drew first blood with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Roos van der Zwaan on court one, and though the Bulldogs managed to take a point on court six, McNeely captured a flight three victory 6-4, 6-0 over Horsfall to put the College up 3-1 in the match.
Anastasia Palaska managed to clinch the match on court five with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Arianna Beltrame, and though the match was already decided, Christi Woodson was able to grind out a 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 win over Ellie Gerlach on court two to pad the win for the Cougars.
CofC returns to action on Saturday, when they host a double-header against SC State and Buffalo.
