SEDONA, Ariz. – The College of Charleston women's golf team claimed its second tournament title of the spring season at the Red Rocks Invitational hosted by Northern Arizona at the par-72 Oakcreek Country Club on Sunday.
The Cougars previously won the 43-team Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Spring Classic at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort on Feb. 27 on Kiawah Island, S.C. The win in the desert marked head coach Jamie Futrell's 25th career coaching victory at the College and 28th overall of his career.
CofC carded a three-round score of 909 (+45), which was six strokes better than runner-up Portland State (+51) in the 18-team tournament field comprised of teams mostly from the West Coast. It marked only the seventh time in program history to win two tournaments in a single season behind the 1994-95, 2000-01, 2001-02, 2008-09, 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons.
"We played three very solid rounds of golf this weekend," Futrell said. "No round was spectacular, but the sum total was very good. It is great to watch this team grow this year."
Freshman Clarissa von Stosch (Kassel, Germany) was the Cougars' top finisher as she tied for third with rounds of 74, 75 and 77 to finish at +10 for the tournament. Sofia Anokhina of North Arizona won individual medalist honors (+4) followed by runner-up Deanna Salvatori of Grand Canyon (+9).
Sophomore Victoria Huskey (Greenville, S.C.) and junior Isi Nilsson (Santiago, Chile) tied for sixth (+12) individually, while freshman Olivia Hamilton (Oakenshaw, England) tied for 13th (+16).
"Congrats on a great finish for Clarissa," Futrell said. "Everyone on the team had major contributions this week and that is what it takes to win. This is also a special one for me being my 25th career win at CofC."
The Cougars will close out the regular season this weekend at the Charleston Invitational hosted by Charleston Southern on April 2-3 at the Rivertowne Country Club in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., in preparation for postseason tournament play at the 2018 CAA Women's Golf Championship on April 13-15 at St. James Plantation in Southport, N.C.
