SOUTHPORT, N.C. – The College of Charleston women's golf team claimed its third Colonial Athletic Association Championship title on Sunday with a 10-stroke victory over two-time defending champion Delaware at the par-72 Reserve Club at St. James Plantation.
The Cougars carded a three-round score of 910 (+46), while the Blue Hens shot 920 (+56). Towson was third (+67), Elon fourth (+70), UNCW fifth (+73), William & Mary sixth (+86), James Madison seventh (+88) and Hofstra eighth (+188).
It marked the program's fourth all-time conference tournament title next to 2006 (Southern Conference), 2014 (CAA) and 2015 (CAA) under head coach Jamie Futrell.
"It was a great win for the team," said Futrell, whose Cougars also tied the second-most single-season tournament wins (3) in program history. "I'm really proud of where they came from in the fall to where they are now with three wins this spring. It shows what can happen when you have a strong work ethic and a willingness to compete. I can't say enough about the improvement I saw from our team from the fall to the spring."
Leading the way for the Cougars was sophomore Victoria Huskey (Greenville, S.C.), who was one shot shy of individual medalist honors at 8-over par for the tournament and tying for second with Ariana Klotz of Delaware. It marked Huskey's career-best finish. Lyberty Anderson of UNCW repeated as individual medalist (+7).
Huskey was named to the CAA All-Tournament Team along with junior Isi Nilsson (Santiago, Chile), who tied Heather Munro of Elon for fourth (+10). Freshman Olivia Hamilton (Oakenshaw, England) tied for seventh (+12), freshman Clarissa von Stosch (Kassel, Germany) tied for 17th (+20) and senior Josefine Garton (Linkoping, Sweden) tied for 21st (+24).
"Congrats to Victoria," Futrell said. "I know she ended up one shot short (of medalist honors), but she had an outstanding tournament as did the whole team. We knew going into the championship, it would take a total team effort and that's what it took to win this weekend. I am happy for the team and that their hard work paid off."
The Cougars earn the league's automatic bid to NCAA Regionals and will learn their postseason destination as the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship Selection Show will be aired on Wednesday, April 25 at 5:30 p.m. (ET) on the Golf Channel. This year's four regional sites are: Austin, Texas, Madison, Wis., San Francisco, Calif., and Tallahassee, Fla.
