CHARLESTON, S.C. – Postseason competition gets underway for the College of Charleston women's golf team – the automatic qualifier out of the Colonial Athletic Association – at the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Tallahassee Regional on May 7-9 at the Don Veller Seminole Golf Course & Club in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Cougars are making their seventh all-time NCAA Regional appearance in program history (2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2018) under head coach Jamie Futrell and won the CAA title with a 10-stroke victory over Delaware on April 15 at St. James Plantation in Southport, N.C.
After a tough fall, where CofC turned in just one Top 5 team finish in tournament play, the Cougars bounced back with three wins in the spring, which tied the 2015 NCAA Regionals and CAA Championship squad in the school record books for most single-season victories.
"We bring the most-improved team in the country from fall to spring to the NCAA Regionals," Futrell said. "It is now time to see if the team can take this next step in its maturing process. It will not be easy to advance to nationals as nine of the Top 30 teams in the country are in our regional. We do have a little karma going after having Laura Fuenfstueck make nationals last year as an individual. She now plays professionally after graduating last spring."
With only one senior on their youth-filled roster and the graduation of Fuenfstueck – one of the best women's golfers to ever don the Maroon & White – the Cougars weren't expected to make NCAA Regionals, which has been different from past teams in school history, Futrell said.
Leading the way for CofC is All-CAA First Team selection Victoria Huskey (Greenville, S.C.), a sophomore who has made six Top-25 finishes this season including individual runner-up at the CAA Championship. In January, the Cougars added junior Isi Nilsson (Santiago, Chile), a transfer from South Carolina with a team-best 74.67 stroke average. The All-CAA Second Team honoree has started in all six tournaments this spring with three Top-15 finishes.
"We are all playing really well right now," Nilsson said. "We aren't nervous. We are just ready to go out there and get some good rounds in."
Freshman Olivia Hamilton (Oakenshaw, England), senior Josefine Garton (Linkoping, Sweden) and junior Anna Buchanan (Athens, Ga.) round out CofC's starting five at this year's NCAA Regionals. Buchanan, also a transfer with upperclassmen experience, steps into the lineup for freshman Clarissa von Stosch (Kassel, Germany), who started for the Cougars in the spring and claimed her first career collegiate win at the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Ariz.
"As for this year's regional team, we unfortunately had to make a change in the lineup from our CAA Championship team," Futrell said. "Freshman Clarissa von Stosch had to return home to Germany, due to a major illness in her family and will not be able to compete this week. We are a deep team and our depth will be tested without Clarissa this week."
The Tallahassee Regional includes a very competitive field with the likes of top-seeded Alabama, Furman, Arizona, Washington, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Florida State, Clemson, Georgia, Tennessee, UNLV, Kennesaw State, Denver, Coastal Carolina, Missouri, Richmond and Albany.
CofC last placed a program-best 14th at the NCAA Raleigh Regional in 2015. The last two years, the Cougars reached postseason play with former CAA Women's Golfer of the Year Fuenfstueck competing as an individual and reaching nationals in 2017.
The Top 6 teams and three individuals will advance from each regional site, which includes the Austin (Texas) Regional, Madison (Wisconsin) Regional and San Francisco (Stanford) Regional. The 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship will be hosted by Oklahoma State University on May 18-23 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
The Cougars will be paired with Richmond and Albany in tomorrow's first round and tee-off the 10th hole beginning at 9:50 a.m. (ET). Live tournament scoring will be available at: www.Golfstat.com
