CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team fell 3-0 to Ball State on Friday evening in the opening game of the Charleston Classic at Patriots Point.
Charleston dominated the opening stages with Rayara Barreto having two shots in the opening ten minutes. The offense continued to push forward with Laura Ortega having three shots in two minutes, but the Cougars couldn't find a way through the Cardinals defense in the opening period.
Ball State took the lead in the opening minutes of the second half with a headed goal from a deep cross on the right byline. They doubled their lead in the 63rd minute from a corner before sealing the win with a counter attacking move that ended with a foul in the penalty area. Sam Kambol converted the penalty to push the Ball State lead to 3-0.
Charleston (2-3-0) pushed in the final minutes, Haley Mannetta hitting the crossbar from 12 yards out, but the final whistle confirmed the Cardinals (3-1-0) victory.
