Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Larson's Career Game Leads Charleston Past The Tribe

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Baileigh Larson set career highs in points (16) and rebounds (7) to lead the College of Charleston women's basketball team to a 66-54 road victory over William & Mary on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Cougars improve to 1-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play, 5-9 overall.

Bri Sullivan got the Cougar offense rolling early with a basket in the paint, Darien Huff opening her account with a three, the 20th straight game the senior has hit at least one three while also hitting 850 career points.

A 7-0 run by the Cougars, with baskets by Madison Taylor from deep, Larson in the paint and a fast break by Latrice Perkins pushed the Charleston lead to eight.

As the first quarter came to a close, Perkins found Ericka Broughton under the basket who drew the foul on a layup and made the extra point count.

Huff continued to make key baskets in the second as the Tribe looked to get back into the game, knocking down a three and also finishing a driving layup.

The Tribe then using a 9-0 run to level the game up at 27-27, before Larson rolled and finished under the basket to put Charleston back on top.

The Cougars defense continued to stay strong, holding the Tribe scoreless for over three minutes with Perkins finding Taylor cutting to the basket in the final seconds of the half to give The College a 31-29 lead at the break.

Tyler Collins got the first points of the second half with a floating basket, Arynn Eady adding a rebound and layup under the paint to push the lead to 35-29.

Larson quickly added another four points of her own with two layups in the paint, the Tribe staying hot from deep by hitting threes either side of an Eady layup to cut into the Charleston lead.

The hosts then rattled off four straight baskets to level the game at 51-51, Collins taking a charge at one end and Larson finishing at the other to give Charleston the lead right back.

Huff hit double digits for the 12th game this season with a steal and fast break finish in the fourth, Larson grabbed a board and put-back to cap off a 6-0 run, setting a new points career high in the process.

The junior continued to add to her new career high with back-to-back baskets in the paint, Charleston holding a 61-51 lead with two minutes remaining.

A 15-3 run over the last five minutes from the Cougars increased the lead with free throws by Taylor icing the game.

With the 66-54 victory, Charleston moves to 5-9 overall, 1-2 in CAA play and 5-8 all-time against the Tribe.

The Cougars now look to two CAA games inside TD Arena next weekend with Towson and James Madison visiting the Lowcountry on Friday and Sunday respectively.

Quotable – Head Coach Candice M. Jackson
"Very pleased... We could not be prouder of the way we played from beginning to end, I love the way that we kept fighting through adversity... They went on a run, we responded, we responded in a such a strong, powerful way and we scored a lot in transition and that's really our game... Our bench came up so big, Baileigh [Larson] with 16 [points] and seven [rebounds], Latrice [Perkins] having eight steals, Madison [Taylor] going perfect from the foul line... It was an overall very well-played game... I think this is very good for us because we talked a lot about who we are and what we want to become, I think that we're starting to see who we really can be."
