NEWARK, Del. – A tough offensive afternoon dropped the College of Charleston women's basketball team to 1-6 in Colonial Athletic Association play, falling 74-50 at the University of Delaware on Sunday afternoon in Bob Carpenter Arena.
The Blue Hens (8-11, 3-4 CAA) opened the game on a 8-0 run, Charleston (5-13, 1-6 CAA) responding with their own 6-0 run started by an
Ericka Broughton layup and finished by
Darien Huff in the paint until the hosts offense found its stride.
Tyler Collins opened the second quarter with a three,
Latrice Perkins following it up with a jumper to give Charleston a quick 5-0 offensive burst and cut the hosts lead to 22-15.
The Cougars defense continued to be effective in the second, holding the hosts to only one basket through the opening five minutes with free throws from the Cougars cutting the lead to 25-20 at the media timeout.
Out of the timeout Charleston again went cold, Delaware making three straight until
Darien Huff knocked down her first three of the game with a quick release in front of the Delaware bench. The senior making at least one trey for the 24
th straight game dating back nearly a year.
In the third the three's kept falling for Charleston, Ford knocking down her first and Huff her second to force a Delaware timeout with the score at 35-32.
Charleston's defensive hustle continued to create chances by forcing a Delaware turnover, Eady pulling down a rebound and laying the ball in to pull Charleston within one and give the freshman 100 career points.
A 10-3 Charleston run was capped by a Collins three-pointer in-front of the Cougars bench for the visitors first lead of the game at 39-38, but from their CofC again struggled to find a basket.
The hosts responded with their own 12-0 run to re-take the lead at 49-39 and force a Cougars timeout. The run extending to 24-1 over the last five minutes of the quarter to push the lead out to 64-46.
Deja Ford hit double-figures in the fourth with a pair of free throws, her 14th double-figure performance of the season, with Delaware keeping Charleston at bay over the remaining minutes to secure a 74-50 victory.
Charleston now looks to a four-game homestand beginning with Northeastern on Friday, Feb. 1 at 6:30 p.m. in TD Arena.
