College of Charleston men's basketball junior guard Brevin Galloway is a well-known animal lover to his teammates and friends. He's often seen posting his cats and dogs all over social media.
The psychology major considers his pets – Baby, Gunna, Titus and Sweetie – to be his good luck charm when playing.
"I'm definitely a cat person, but my girlfriend, Kayla (Santos), had a dog already, so we kind of combined them all together," he said. "But, I'm a big cat person."
Growing up in the upstate of South Carolina, Galloway and his family had four dogs and a cat.
"Cats are just easier to take care of," he said. "They are on their own and independent most of the time, so you don't really have to worry about them. You just need to make sure to put some food and water out for them."
Though he loves all of his pets, Galloway says his most favored companion is his youngest cat, Gunna, a gray tabby.
"He's just a daddy's boy," he said. "He always follows me around. When I eat or study, he is sitting right beside me. As soon as I come home, he jumps on my lap. He is my favorite one by far."
Galloway got his first pet when he was around eight-or-nine years old.
"We were playing a game of H.O.R.S.E. outside and we beat my dad (Derrick)," said Galloway of he and his younger brother, Braden. "We made a bet with him, that if we won, we could get anything we wanted. We wanted a kitten, so we went right to the pet store that day and got a kitten."
The love for animals extends throughout his family.
"Back home I have two dogs," he said. "They love when I come to visit them. My mom (Donna) loves them and my brothers love them. My brother is thinking of getting two cats and my dad has a cat."
Even with his busy schedule balancing school, practice and games, Galloway feels his furry companions are no trouble at all.
"We keep everything organized and clean," he said. "We pretty much are on a strict schedule when it comes to feeding them and taking care of the litter box. It is a big responsibility, but it (taking care of four pets) is a lot easier than people may think."
To Galloway, his pets are more than a hobby off the court. They are his family.
"I treat them more like my kids," he said. "I feel like they are dependent on me and pretty much provide them with what they need."
With Halloween season and the holidays near, Galloway and his girlfriend like to dress up each of their pets in festive outfits. Their costumes are no secret, but they enjoy sharing pictures and videos of them dressed up for every occasion on each big day.
In the future, Galloway hopes to do something involving animals. As a teen, he volunteered at a local animal shelter and liked working with rescue animals. In fact, all four of his pets are rescues.
"I like giving them all a better future," he said.
His love for animals is certainly a characteristic that makes him a kind-hearted player, teammate and fan favorite. And, man's best friends (dogs and cats) are happy they've found a loving home with Galloway.
