Cougars Take Down Georgia Southern In Home Opener

CHARLESTON, S.C.  – Freshman Clara Errard's first collegiate singles victory proved to be the match clinching point as the College of Charleston women's tennis team came-from-behind to defeat Georgia Southern, 4-2, at Patriots Point on Sunday afternoon.

Singles action was the difference as Charleston dropped the doubles point to the Eagles, despite Anastasia Palaska and Lily LaBiche taking down Truscott/Hrda of Georgia Southern decisively, 6-0, on court two. The Eagles took a 2-6 victory on court one and a 3-6 win on court three to secure the lone doubles point.

Singles action followed with Errard the match winner. After dropping the opening set 1-6, in flight four, the freshman battled back to claim set two, 6-1, before taking a 6-3, victory in the third to give Charleston the match-winning point and claim the home opening victory over the Eagles. The victory also gave Errard, a freshman from Toulouse, France, her first collegiate victory at The College.

Senior Turner Yates moved to 3-1 on the season after a straight sets 6-0, 6-2, win on court five with Catalina Medici also winning 6-1, 6-0, on court six to move to 1-2 on the season.

Christi Woodson faced an early scare on court one after dropping the opener 1-6, before the senior took control with a 6-4, 7-5, victory to move to a 2-3 record on court one.

Anastasia Palaska's match on court three was unfinished with the junior battling back from an opening set loss to level the match with a decisive 6-1 second set. Palaska and Goines' match unfinished with Palaska leading 4-3 in the third.

With the victory, Charleston moves to 2-3 on the season and 26-3 all-time against Georgia Southern. The Cougars have now won 21 straight against the Eagles dating back to 2001 with Charleston holding a 23-4 record in home openers under head coach Angelo Anastopoulo.

Anastapoulo and the Cougars now enjoy a 12-day break before facing Colonial Athletic Association rivals UNCW on Feb. 22 at Patriots Point. Doubles play is scheduled to open the match at 2 p.m. with singles play following on.

Quotable – Head Coach Angelo Anastapoulo
"It was terrific for our team to come out here and have a great come-from-behind victory against a talented Georgia Southern team, especially with Clara Errard who has been working so hard and shined today in her clinching victory after dropping the first set... She's really starting to believe in herself, when she does her ceiling is limitless so we're really excited about the future... We appreciate all the fans that came out, they really helped us get the victory... A lot of student-athletes came from behind today and really showed a lot of fight and character... That's what we need to take into our upcoming matches, there's no easy matches, it's such a competitive schedule."
