Siegling Silences UML Bats in Win Over River Hawks

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – Drayton Siegling took a shutout into the seventh, and Chandler Sparkman contributed at the plate and in the circle to lead the College of Charleston to a 5-1 win over UMass Lowell in the final game of the Holy City Showdown at Patriots Point.

The Cougars split their four tournament games and evened their record at 7-7. Charleston is back in action next weekend at the Green and White Invitational in Charlotte with games against Valparaiso, Wagner and the host 49ers.

Siegling picked up her second win without a loss, limiting the River Hawks to four hits and one run with four strikeouts in 6.1 innings. She blanked UML and allowed only two balls out of the infield before Sara Siteman ended the shutout bid with a solo homer leading off the seventh.

Following a double and walk, Sparkman relieved Siegling and struck out a batter before Lexee Emanuel caught the runner at second breaking for third and started a rundown that ended with a tag by Noel Dominguez that ended the game.

Charleston went in front with four runs in the third. Dexlie Inman doubled, Yari Felix singled and Madi Brown brought them both home with a base hit to center. Sparkman then launched a drive well over the fence in left for her first home run as a Cougar.

Felix had nine hits in 15 at bats over the weekend and raised her season batting average to a team-leading .429.

Meanwhile, Siegling set down the first nine River Hawks including four strikeouts before allowing an infield single to open the fourth. The freshman added another 1-2-3 inning in the sixth and produced a total of 10 ground balls among her 19 outs.

Inman doubled again to start the fifth, her fourth two-bagger of the tournament, and scored when a throw by Siteman hit her in the back during a rundown between third and home.
