Cougars Fall In Down To The Wire Match Against CSU

CHARLESTON, S.C.  – The College of Charleston women's tennis team battled to a narrow 4-3 loss to in-city rivals Charleston Southern at Patriots Point on Monday afternoon with Christi Woodson, Turner Yates and Catalina Medici picking up singles victories for the Cougars.

Singles action followed with Errard falling in straight sets on court four while Yates dominated on court five with a straight sets 6-0, 6-0, win to pull a point back for the Cougars. Yates moves to 5-1 in singles action through 2019, 1-0 on court four and 4-1 on court five.

Playing in the number one spot, Woodson moved to 4-3 in flight one action with a 6-1, 6-7, 6-1, victory, the senior dominating the first and third sets while Medici won 6-4, 7-6, on court six. Medici defeating Tiffany Pyritz of CSU to pull Charleston level with the Buccaneers at 3-3.

The matchup between Lily LaBiche and Michelle Schmitz on court three proved to be the match-winner. LaBiche dropped the first set 3-6, taking the second 6-4, before falling in the third 3-6, as Charleston Southern took the 4-3 win.

With the loss Charleston moves to 3-4 on the season and now look to continue a long home stand with a Sunday matchup against Appalachian State. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.

Quotable – Head Coach Angelo Anastapoulo
On the match…
"It's a tough loss… Charleston Southern were certainly a lot better in the tight situations than we were… It was great to renew the city rivalry because you get three chances to win a title each year, to win the city title, to win the conference title and to win the national title… We didn't handle our first title chance today, we've got to get a little bit tougher… The freshman, this is their first chance at being in a situation like this [in-city rivalry], hopefully they're going to grow from this… It's a tough loss, we were 16-0 against them but that's ended and it's time to start a new streak… We're hoping this will be a growing experience and we as coaches need to prepare our team better for these tight situations."
