CHARLESTON, S.C. – Freshman forward
Arynn Eady scored 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for a first career double-double, senior guard
Darien Huff matching her career high 22 points, as the College of Charleston women's basketball team dispatched Hofstra 70-62 in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup on Sunday afternoon.
The Pride (7-14, 1-8 CAA) raced out to a 13-6 lead as the Cougars struggled to find early baskets, Huff leading all Cougars with four at the first media timeout.
The Charleston (6-14, 2-7 CAA) offense began to find its stride as the quarter wound down,
Deja Ford igniting a 6-0 burst by knocking down her first three of the game and grabbing a free-throw rebound and put-back to cut the Pride's lead to 16-14.
Charleston used a 7-0 run early in the second with Eady using smart footwork in the paint for a layup and Huff knocking down her first three of the game. The senior making at least one three-point basket for the 26
th straight game dating back to Feb. 18, 2018.
The teams continued to go back and forth before half-time, Ford reaching double-digits out of the media timeout for the 16
th time this season.
Eady's strong finishing in the paint inspired another 7-0 run to open the third quarter, the freshman matching and then setting a new career high with a pair of free throws.
Charleston forced 7 straight misses from the Pride over a four-minute stretch until Hofstra's ace guard Boogie Brozoski stopped the drought, the senior eventually finishing the game with 31 points and six assists.
Huff continued to find open looks on the perimeter, knocking down her third three of the game in-front of the Charleston bench to hit 16 points and extend the lead, until the Pride used a buzzer-beating layup to keep themselves within the game.
In the opening stages of the fourth Huff again was the catalyst, a tough drive and floater over two defenders giving her 20 points, Ford hitting another jumper to push the Charleston lead out to four points.
As the game entered the final stages, the Charleston defensive effort held the Pride to 2-11 from the field, Huff matching her career high 22 points with free throws as
Madison Taylor and
Tyler Collins also helped ice the game from the charity stripe and push the lead into double-digits.
Hofstra made a jumper with three seconds left to make the final scoreline 70-62 as Charleston moves to 6-14 on the season, 2-7 in CAA play, with the victory.
The Cougars now look to a second-straight home weekend as the second half of conference play begins with William & Mary on Friday morning (Education Game) and Elon on Sunday.
Quotable – Head Coach Candice M. Jackson
"It was a total team effort... We were very poised, very resilient, very patient at the right moments... I think everybody who came in contributed in some way, there's so many positives on the stat sheet and there are so many things not on the stat sheet that we did as a team that we did well... I couldn't be prouder of this team."
