Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – Brittany Vicary and
Lexee Emanuel combined to drive in 13 runs as the College of Charleston swept Purdue and Pitt on the opening day of the Cougar Classic at Patriots Point.
Vicary had five hits including two doubles and two triples, knocked in seven runs and scored four times while Emanuel added five hits and six RBI as the Cougars posted an 8-4 victory over the Boilermakers and a 10-4 triumph over Pitt.
Charleston is back in action Saturday with games against Virginia Tech at 3:45 and Wichita State at 8:15.
In the win over Purdue, Emanuel singled in a run in the first and had a two-run double as part of a four-run second that staked the Cougars to a 5-0 lead. The Boilermakers pulled back to within 5-2 before
Gracyn Thrasher lined a home run to left in the fifth, and Vicary had an RBI triple followed by a run-scoring single by
Jenna Helberg the following inning.
Izzy Berouty worked the first four innings and then re-entered in the seventh to preserve the lead. She allowed five hits and one run with two strikeouts in five innings to pick up her 30th career win.
Vicary came back later in the day with two doubles, a triple and five RBI in the win over the Panthers, and her seven RBI on the day matched her total from the entire 2018 season. She highighted a five-run fourth with a bases-clearing triple and joined Emanuel with two-run doubles in another five-run frame in the sixth after Pitt had closed to within 5-4.
Summer Jenkins went the first 5.2 innings to pick up the win, and
Kylie Burke worked the final 1.1 innings to earn her first career save.
Kelly Sinclair added four hits including two doubles and scored five runs in the two games, and freshmen
Savannah Huff and
Payton Wade joined Helberg with their first career hits.
