CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston equestrian team will go head-to-head with Coastal Carolina in its first collegiate home event of the season – the CofC vs. Coastal Carolina Duel Show on Sunday, March 24 – at the White Horses Boarding and Training Facility in Huger, S.C.
The horse show will be a head-to-head format with a hybrid blend of Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) and National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) formats.
Freshman Camilla Grover-Dodge (Lancaster, Pa.) and freshman Meredith Hutchens (Newport News, Va.) will start things off with demo rides Over Fences beginning at 10:30 a.m. followed by demo rides in Flat.
The team portion gets underway at 11:15 a.m. with an Over Fences duel between five CofC riders and Coastal Carolina riders. Competing for the Cougars will be senior Sophia Meserve (Portsmouth, N.H.), junior Molly Coyle (Davidsonville, Md.), sophomore Beverly Davis, freshman Kate Coffey (Westford, Mass.) and senior Hannah Bentz (Boca Raton, Fla.).
At 12:15 p.m., the team head-to-head competition continues with an On The Flat duel between six riders from each school in the ring. Freshman Morgan Hazeltine (Hingham, Mass.), sophomore Lauren Duffy (Alexandria, Va.), sophomore Cassidy Hyatt (Colorado Springs, Colo.), junior Stephanie Hustad (Lansdale, Pa.), junior Alyson Bushey (Beaufort, S.C.) and junior Elif Caynak (Fort Mill, S.C.) will compete for CofC. The final totals from each ride will contribute to the final team score.
"We are thrilled to finally be hosting a collegiate horse show here at White Horses," CofC Head Coach Natasha V. McCarthy said. "The CofC training facility and our horses are ready to be seen and shown off, and our student-athletes are geared up for many reasons.
"Some of the seasoned-athletes will be given the opportunity to practice in a pressure setting, before next weekend's IHSA Zone Finals at Auburn University. For the newer athletes, Sunday's duel will give them a chance to get their feet wet and comfortable with the collegiate setting. We are looking forward to having all of our fans and supporters out to the farm. We welcome a big Cougar cheer squad on Sunday."
An awards ceremony will follow at 1:30 p.m. crowning individual Most Outstanding Performers for Flat and Fences as well as Best Horse.
