Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – The College of Charleston dropped a 5-1 decision to Hofstra on Sunday at Patriots Point, giving the Pride the series victory in the opening weekend of Colonial Athletic Association play.
Madison Burns won for the second time in as many days, allowing only two hits through six innings before the Cougars (15-15, 1-2 CAA) got consecutive singles from
Yari Felix,
Madi Brown and
Kelly Sinclair in the seventh, the latter driving in Charleston's lone run.
Burns then induced pinch-hitter
Ginna Leaphart to ground into a double play to wrap up the win for the Pride (14-12, 2-1).
Noel Dominguez had the only two hits for the Cougars before they staged their seventh inning rally. Charleston was able to draw six walks off Burns but stranded nine runners.
Izzy Berouty took the loss, allowing seven hits and three runs in 4.2 innings.
Hofstra went ahead in the first on a two-run homer by Meagan Giordan and added a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Kasey Collins had three hits to pace the Pride.
The Cougars are back in action Tuesday with a non-conference date at Savannah State and resume CAA play next weekend with a trip to Drexel.
