Savannah, Ga. – Brittany Vicary had three hits including a double, scored a run and drove one in to lead the College of Charleston to a 5-2 win over Savannah State in the opening game of a doubleheader on Tuesday at Lady Tiger Field.
The Tigers gained a split with a 6-3 victory in the nightcap. The Cougars (16-16) return to Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend with a series at Drexel beginning on Saturday.
Dexlie Inman tripled with two outs in the second inning of the first game, and Vicary and Noel Dominguez followed with RBI singles to stake the Cougars to a 2-0 lead. Kelly Sinclair and Vicary singled in the fourth and both moved up two bases on a wild pitch with Sinclair scoring to make it 3-1.
Charleston added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh when a fly ball to deep left off the bat of Chandler Sparkman was dropped for a two-base error. Savannah State tallied once in the bottom of the frame and left two runners on base.
Sparkman went the first four innings and allowed one hit and struck out five to pick up her fourth win of the season. Summer Jenkins entered in the fifth and worked the final three innings for the save.
The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap on a two-run triple by Jenna Helberg, but the Tigers evened it in their half on a home run by Cortni Jones with one on. Savannah State then put together three hits and took advantage of a key error to score three times in the fourth for a 5-2 lead.
The Tigers employed some unusual strategy in the fifth with the bases loaded and two outs. Helberg, who added a double in the fourth, was walked intentionally to force in a run and cut it to a two-run game. But the strategy worked when the Cougars left the bases full, and Charleston failed to score in its final two at bats.
