CHARLESTON, S.C. – After battling to a doubles point victory to open the afternoon, the College of Charleston men's tennis team fell 6-1 to Elon with the Phoenix dominating singles play to pick up the Colonial Athletic Association rivalry win on Monday afternoon.
No. 75 ITA/Oracle ranked duo of
Benedikt Henning and
Johnny Wang got the Cougars off to a perfect start with a 6-3 win on court two in doubles play,
Ben Cawston and
Robby Krick going the distance to battle back to a 7-6 tie-breaking win on court three to secure the doubles point.
Easton Thomas and
Ksawery Pociej going unfinished on court one with the match level at 6-6.
But it was the visiting Phoenix who dominated singles action to take the victory. Felipe Osses-Konig took down Cawston 6-2, 6-1, on court three, Kyle Frankel defeating Wang on court four 6-2, 6-2. Thomas fell in straight sets on court two with Pociej falling in three sets on court five, 1-6, 6-3, 4-6, to Camilo Ponce to give Elon an unassailable 4-1 lead.
Andre Limon also went to three sets on court six before falling, Henning dropping two tie-breakers in sets two and three to see his 15-match unbeaten run on court one come to an end.
The Cougars will hit the courts again on Wednesday in another CAA matchup against Drexel. First serve is set for 4:30 p.m. following the conclusion of the Charleston women's tennis teams match against the Dragons.
