
Five Cougars Establish Personal Bests at Gamecock Invitational

Columbia, S.C. – Kristen Cherry set personal records in two events and four other College of Charleston women's track & field athletes achieved PRs at the Gamecock Invitational held on Saturday in Columbia.
Cherry was part of a group of three Cougars that earned PRs in the 1500 with a time of 4:57.63. Emma DeRoberts (5:19.71) and Laurie Fogleman (5:23.07) also set career bests in the event, and Cate Ambrose had a mark of 4:45.31 to finish 16th in a field of 59 runners.
Cherry also had a PR of 2:24.48 in the 800 to finish one second behind Ambrose. Also bettering their career standard were Gianna Cucinotta in the 400 (1:02.83) and Brooklynn Barton in the shot put (12.08m, 39-7 ¾). Barton's mark improved her sixth-place standing in the school record book and was sixth at the meet.
Stephanie Laudien was one of several Charleston athletes to set new season bests, turning in a top mark of 11.73m (38-6) in the triple jump to finish sixth and come within .02 meters of her personal best. Leona Burton Rojas had season bests in the 100 (12.60) and long jump (5.56m, 18-3).
A pair of javelin throwers had their top efforts of the season, including Nicole Lane (40.32m, 132-3) and Jenny Martin (39.12m, 128-4). Lane, Martin and Barton (35.71m, 117-2) were second, fifth and sixth, respectively, on Saturday.
Breanna Lewis (1:08.82 in the 400 hurdles) and Courtney Brooks (46.20m, 151-7 in the hammer) rounded out the group of Cougars who set new season bests. Brooks was eighth at the meet while Chloe Christian tied for sixth in the pole vault at 3.45m (11-3 ¾).
The Cougars are back in action next Friday and Saturday at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C.
