Season Ends In Narrow 4-2 Loss To JMU At CAA Championships

BURLINGTON, N.C. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team saw its season come to an end in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship Quarterfinals in a narrow 4-2 loss to James Madison on Thursday morning.

A second set tie-breaker on court six gave the Dukes the victory with Charleston picking up singles wins through Benedikt Henning on court one, Johnny Wang on court four with Ksawery Pociej leading in a third set before JMU clinched the match.

James Madison took the doubles point with 6-2 victories on courts one and three, Henning and Wang going unfinished on court two when leading 4-3.

In singles play the Dukes raced into a 3-0 lead behind straight set wins over Easton Thomas (6-0, 6-0) on court two and Ben Cawston (6-2, 6-4) on court three.

Charleston began its rally behind Henning's final victory as a Cougar on court one. The senior winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, to get The College on the board, Wang making it 3-2 with a 7-5, 6-3, victory over Damon Roberts on court four.

Robby Krick fought all the way on court six as the Cougars looked to complete the comeback, the freshman dropping the first set 6-1, before levelling up the second at 6-6, eventually falling in a tiebreaker 7-5, with JMU clinching with the second set win.

Pociej battled back from a first set loss to level up on court five before the match was called early when the sophomore was leading in a third and final set.

Henning closes out his career at The College as a two-time All-CAA selection after transferring to Charleston after his freshman season. The senior from Bad Hersfeld, Germany, racked up 44 singles and 28 doubles victories over three years, finishing his senior season with a 17-3 record in number one singles and a 13-3 record in number two doubles with Wang. The doubles duo also spent nearly two months in the Oracle/ITA Doubles National Rankings.

Quote - Head Coach Jay Bruner
"We were outplayed for the first hour of the match today then we got momentum moving and some good competing for the second hour and needed three points... JMU played solid in some key moments, especially at No. 6 singles and unfortunately it cost us the match... We got to see one of our best ever competitors play his last match today and we will miss him representing us so well... Everyone else is returning with a years experience that will pay off for years to come.... This season was just what we wanted until today and it's hard to see it over for this team."
