ATHENS, Ga. – When College of Charleston junior Logan Sowell tees off at the NCAA regional tournament this week, he will look to maintain the poised and consistent approach he's had all year long.

"Logan is our easiest player from a preparation standpoint," CofC Head Coach Mitch Krywulycz said. "I'm trying to make it as simple as I can for him and play to his strengths."

Sowell is one of 10 golfers competing as an individual in the Athens Regional hosted by Georgia at the par-71 UGA Golf Course. Thirteen teams will contend as well. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each site will advance to compete at nationals.

Sowell has competed in nine tournaments this season, finishing in the Top 10 seven times. He is just the sixth men's golfer in school history to qualify as an individual for NCAA Regionals.

His teammate Michael Sass qualified for the regionals last season, and he finished tied for 28th at the NCAA Bryan (Texas) Regional. He along with other teammates gave Sowell advice going into the event.

"I've always heard from them what it's all about, but it's nice to get my chance to come here," Sowell said. "Sass is just always telling me to stay patient."

Sowell's 72.12 average is a team best this season. He will need to maintain that consistent approach to be successful this week.

Down the stretch at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship, Sowell led the Cougars to a runner-up finish. His final-round score was 70 (1-under par) and he finished just two shots behind individual medalist Segundo Oliva Pinto of UNCW.

"It gave me the confidence in myself that when the pressure is on, I can actually hit shots and do what I need to do to finish strong," he said.

While he was pleased with his individual performance, Sowell said the conference championship showed his team that they have a lot to work on going into next season. He said he wants to use this opportunity to get better.

Krywulycz is in his first season with Cougars. He has had success with previous teams at NCAA Regionals including a run with Purdue where the Boilermakers reached the regionals six years in a row.

"I try to look at this as a good experience for him individually," Krywulycz said. "It validates his work. It just shows that he's headed in the right direction."

Both said it was important to do the little things right at this tournament. Krywulycz said that Sowell makes shots with ease that would normally be stressful to other players.

Sowell said he feels confident in his ability to keep the ball on the fairway, but he emphasized the importance of limiting three-putts. He says putting will be the key to his success this week.

Competing as an individual is certainly different than doing so as a team. However, Sowell will just need to do what he's done all season – be consistent.

"Logan's game in general is a pretty relaxed game," Krywulycz said. "It'll be a matter if he can place it on the right sections. If he hits the ball how he normally hits it, then he gives himself the chance to putt well."

Sowell's ability to stay on par has been a key aspect to his game this year. He has completed 14 rounds of par or better including five rounds in the 60s.

Sowell will tee off on hole No. 1 tomorrow at 1:01 p.m. (ET) in the opening round of play.
