Cougars Fall to William & Mary, 1-0, in 14-Inning Heartbreaker

HARRISONBURG, Va. --- William & Mary scored the only run of the game with two outs in the 14th inning to edge College of Charleston, 1-0, in the longest game in Colonial Athletic Association Championship history on Thursday evening at Veterans Memorial Park.

With the victory, third-seeded William & Mary (33-20) advances to take on fifth-seeded UNCW in the semifinals on Friday night. The loss snaps an eight-game winning streak for second-seeded College of Charleston (36-20) and sends the Cougars into an elimination game against fourth-seeded Northeastern on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m.

Griffin McLarty (Buckner, Ky.) pitched a gem for the Cougars striking out eight and scattering five hits across eight and one-third shutout innings. Nathan Ocker (Middletown, Pa.) fanned three in four and two-thirds scoreless frames as Josh Price (Dillion, S.C.) allowed one run on two hits in one inning of work to take the loss.

Luke Manzo (Marietta, Ga.) paced the Cougars with a 3-for-5 night as Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.) added a pair of knocks. The Cougars had multiple opportunities to score and put the go-ahead or winning run on second four times in the later innings.

Hart nearly scored the winning run in the bottom of the 12th after reaching on an infield single to lead off the frame. The speedy second baseman capitalized on a failed pickoff attempt moments later advancing to third as the catcher's throw sailed down the right field line. The right fielder's throw into third then bounced wide, prompting Hart to take off for the plate before being thrown out on the play.

Owen Socher drove Jack Cone for the winning run with a two-out RBI single in the 14th. Cone and Matthew Trehub each collected two hits on the night. Bodie Sheehan pitched into the ninth for the Tribe, scattering four hits across eight and one-third scoreless frames. Chris Farrell tossed four shutout innings to earn the win.

The Cougars return to the diamond on Friday morning in an elimination game against No. 4 Northeastern. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
