Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – Freshman
Savannah Huff delivered the biggest hit of her young career to cap a rally in the first game, and
Lexee Emanuel powered the College of Charleston in the nightcap with a home run as the Cougars swept a doubleheader from UNCW at Patriots Point.
The Cougars (24-28, 8-12 CAA) and the Seahawks (26-27, 8-12) will face off in what amounts to a playoff game tomorrow at 2:00 with the winner earning a bid to the CAA Tournament and the loser seeing its season come to an end. Seniors
Kelly Sinclair,
Madi Brown and
Jordan Barcus will be honored following the game.
It appeared Charleston was on its way to being eliminated from the playoff hunt in the opener when it trailed 5-2 heading to the bottom of the sixth. But the Cougars responded with five runs, the last two on a two-out single by Huff, who had entered the game in the top of the inning as a defensive replacement.
Summer Jenkins went 3.1 innings of two-hit relief, allowing only one earned run, to keep the Cougars in contention, and
Izzy Berouty finished in the seventh for the save, inducing a 6-3 double play grounder to end the contest.Â
Brittany Vicary also had two RBI including a triple in the fifth that jumpstarted the Charleston comeback. However, the sophomore left fielder was injured on the play trying to score and was replaced by Huff.
The second game was less dramatic but equally as critical for the Cougars. Emanuel broke up a scoreless tie in the third when she launched a three-run homer well over the fence in left center for her third of the season and 12th of her career to move into a tie for 14th in school history.
Run-scoring singles by
Noel Dominguez and
Kelly Sinclair in the fourth provided insurance, and the duo of Jenkins and Berouty again starred in the circle to preserve the win. Jenkins went the first four innings and allowed two hits with a pair of strikeouts to pick up her second win of the day.
Berouty entered after a leadoff single in the fifth and retired nine of the 10 batters with four strikeouts for her second save of the twinbill and fifth of the season, breaking her own school record set two years ago. Berouty also increased her school career record in saves to 12.
Dexlie Inman had a pair of doubles in the second game for a team-leading 15. Dominguez, Sinclair and
Madi Brown joined Inman with two base hits.
