Spartans Top Cougars on Saturday Evening

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston volleyball team fell to Michigan State in straight sets on Saturday evening at the Hampton Inn Charleston/West Ashley CofC Classic despite a furious third-set rally sparked by superb play from freshmen Emma Falk and Tori Carpenter.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Michigan State combined for 37 kills, 10 blocks and a .250 hitting percentage while holding the Cougars to 26 kills, 46 digs and a 0.44 attacking clip. The Spartans won the match by scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-23 behind a 16-kill, nine dig performance from Meredith Norris. Michigan State setter Audrey Alford added a double-double with 16 assists and 10 digs.
 
COUGAR OF THE MATCH
Falk made an immediate impact in her collegiate debut, connecting for three kills on six swings and adding a match-high four blocks in only two sets.
 
NOTABLES
  • Senior Lauren Freed posted team-highs of eight kills, 13 digs and three service aces.
  • The Cougars played their best set of the night in the third stanza with 14 kills and three blocks.
  • Sophomore Sylvia Duggan finished with seven kills and six digs.
  • Senior Kayla Demari marked her CofC debut with a kill and two blocks.
  • Carpenter turned in a near double-double with nine assists and eight digs.
  • Freed and junior libero Logan Manusky were named to the all-tournament team.
