Troy, Ala. – Freshman Jenna Carter had four hits and scored three runs, and fellow newcomer Payton Lemire starred in the circle to lead College of Charleston on the first day of the Trojan Classic in Troy, Ala.

The Cougars dropped both their games on Friday, losing 7-3 to Western Kentucky and 8-3 to host Troy. Charleston is back in action with games against North Florida and Lipscomb on Saturday.

Carter had two hits in both games and added a stolen base in the nightcap. Lemire entered the game against Troy in the fourth and retired seven of the eight batters she faced with three strikeouts.

In the day's first game, Chandler Sparkman's RBI single in the fourth created a 1-1 tie, but the Hilltoppers responded with four in the bottom of the frame including a three-run homer by Paige Carter.

Gracyn Thrasher singled in two runs in the seventh, but the Cougars could get no closer.

The Cougars erased a 2-0 deficit against Troy on a sacrifice fly by Jenna Helberg and run-scoring single from Noel Dominguez in the third. A two-run homer by Kelly Horne in the bottom of the third put the Trojans back in front, and they broke it open with four unearned runs in the fourth.
